WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF POLYPODIUM LEUCOTOMOS?

Polypodium leucotomos, a fern native to Central and South America, has been recognized for its potent antioxidant and photoprotective properties. It is one of the best-studied dermatologic supplements with high-quality evidence supporting its use in a myriad of conditions. When taken orally, Polypodium leucotomos offers several key benefits for skin health:

  • Sun Protection: One of the primary benefits of Polypodium leucotomos is its ability to protect the skin from the harmful effects of UV radiation. By neutralizing free radicals produced by sun exposure, it helps to prevent sunburn and reduces the risk of skin damage and photoaging.
  • Anti-Inflammatory Properties: This extract exhibits anti-inflammatory effects, making it beneficial for conditions like vitiligo, melasma, atopic dermatitis and other inflammatory skin disorders. It helps to reduce redness, swelling and irritation, particularly in photosensitive disorders due to the effects described above.
  • Antioxidant Protection: Polypodium leucotomos contains antioxidants that protect the skin from oxidative stress caused by environmental factors. This protection helps in maintaining skin health and preventing premature aging.

WHAT IS POLYPODIUM LEUCOTOMOS?

Oral Polypodium leucotomos supplements are typically consumed to enhance the skin’s defense against UV damage and to provide systemic antioxidant benefits. The extract is derived from the leaves and rhizomes of the fern, and it is often available in tablet form. A novel chewable, gummy form of Polypodium extract is also available for use in pediatrics or other populations that may have trouble swallowing tablets.

IS POLYPODIUM LEUCOTOMOS SAFE FOR ALL SKIN TYPES AND TONES?

Oral Polypodium leucotomos is generally considered safe for most skin types and tones. It is well-tolerated by many individuals and can be incorporated into a daily routine for enhanced sun protection and skin health. However, as with any supplement, it is advisable for individuals with specific health conditions or those taking other medications to consult with a healthcare professional before starting use.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

While oral Polypodium leucotomos is usually well-tolerated, adverse reactions are exceedingly rare. However, pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should seek medical advice before use due to limited safety data in these populations. Additionally, individuals with known allergies to Polypodium leucotomos or any related compounds should avoid using products containing this ingredient to prevent adverse reactions.
