Lanolin is an emollient that forms a protective layer over the skin. It effectively retains moisture in the skin and prevents evaporation of water from the top layer of the skin. It helps keep the skin moisturized and allows the skin to heal. It has also been used to improve hydration of the lips and prevent further chapping.
Lanolin is a waxy substance that is naturally produced by sheep to protect their wool. Because the properties of lanolin are similar to those of natural oils found in the skin (sebum), it’s a popular ingredient found in moisturizers. Lanolin alcohol is an emollient derived from lanolin and is commonly used in skincare products.
Though uncommon, contact dermatitis to lanolin has been reported; the risk of contact dermatitis may be higher in those with eczema-prone skin.
