Curcumin has been used in many dermatologic conditions, including lichen planus, psoriasis, vitiligo, basal cell carcinoma (via upregulation of p53), squamous cell carcinoma (via NF-kappa-beta inhibition) and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (by downregulating STAT-3). In animal studies it accelerates wound healing based on its antioxidant activity. It may also have antimicrobial effects against Candida.
Curcumin is the most biologically active component in turmeric (Curcuma longa). Its health benefits have been explored due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antineoplastic and antimicrobial effects.
Curcumin is likely safe for all skin types and tones based on available evidence. Allergic contact dermatitis and pigmented contact dermatitis has been observed with it.
There are many adverse effects of curcumin that have been observed, typically in high concentrations when taken orally. These effects include diarrhea and nausea, which are the most common. It is contraindicated for biliary obstruction, gallstones and hypersensitivity reactions.
