Because cannabinoid receptors are involved in regulatory function in the skin, agonism of these receptors by CBD oil upregulates production of proteins (e.g., HMOX1) involved in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory roles. Furthermore, it is shown to aid in membrane integrity in skin cells. Further studies have implicated CBD in its role for relief of pain, pruritus, eczema, acne and hair regulation.
Cannabidiol is a compound extracted from the cannabis plant, suspended in oil.
CBD oil is likely safe for all skin types and tones based on available data. However, individuals with hypersensitivity to CBD oil or its derivatives should be cautious when using products containing CBD oil.
There is minimal data on contraindications for the topical application of CBD oil. Although rare, contact dermatitis reactions to CBD oil have been reported.
