Butylparaben acts as a preservative, extending a dermatological product’s shelf life. Additionally, it has broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, protecting against bacterial and fungal organisms. Due to its stability over a wide pH range, it is versatile for a breadth of formulations needed for the dermatological industry.
Butylparaben is a subclass of parabens, used as a preservative with antimicrobial properties.
Generally, butylparaben is safe to use on all skin types and tones. However, individuals with sensitive skin may develop discomfort or allergic reactions.
Butylparaben should not be used in individuals with a prior hypersensitivity reaction to it. At high concentrations, there have been concerns for hormonal disruption and adverse health effects, including carcinogenic concerns with long-term use. Therefore, pregnant and breastfeeding women should use caution.
